Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
