European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
