Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
